Cate

Levy

Actress / Singer

When I started to do theatre I was like "woah—I can express myself."

Cate Levy grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, around the corner from a local theater. Her parents made theater a big part of their lives, so Cate was exposed to shows and acting classes from a young age. Although she tried many sports and activities, she realized that the only things she “really loved to do was theater.” She recalls that her regional theater put on A Christmas Carol performance each year, so she ambitiously auditioned and received a part as an understudy. She had a role in that play for the next three years, and says, “it was the first time I realized I could really do theater, and the first time I’ve made a dream come true. I wanted it, and I got it.”

Cate also participated in chorus for 6 years, but never believed she was good at singing until she came to Lawrenceville. She began her singing career by trying out and joining an acapella group, then began working closely with a vocal coach who has had an “amazing influence” on her. Cate believes singing “is the best way to tell a story,” and practices mostly contemporary music from musicals like Next to Normal, A Chorus Line, Dear Evan Hansen, and many more. She sings what she loves.

So far, Cate has participated in Freshman Shakespeare, Winterfest, the Broadway Cabaret, and Guys and Dolls. Next year, she will play Penelope Pennywise in the fall musical, Urinetown. She has been gaining confidence as a performer with each new experience, as she feels that the performing arts are the way she can truly express herself.

And as for dance, Cate has been cut from SDC for the past two years, but she says that won’t stop her from trying out again next year!
